Online DirectoriesA business listed in industry specific online directories is always going to have the upper hand over any business that is not listed. Whether that business’s services are provided online or off, the advantages to having your listing online are numerous.

The Benefits of getting Listed in Industry-Specific Directories

Whether your services are online or offline, professional Business directories are like online marketing platforms for your business. It is a fantastic resource for your customers, with the searchable databases being a great place to find, search, review and compare various professional services.

Local Business, or business that provide offline services can really benefit the most from being listed in an industry specific business directory.

The local listing is the list that you see whenever you search a term that includes a specific location like city or state. Its positive results encourage even offline businesses to get placement on the listing. What makes a local business listing appealing to business owners is the fact that you can get an online presence without a website, but more importantly – you are instantly visible to thousands of potential customers.

Not only do the advanced features make the user experience more enjoyable and the ability to find you easier, the custom-branded profiles and advertising available to you make it even easier to make your business stand out and get noticed.

Geographic targeting works like this, example. A potential customer will type “Bergen County Real Estate” then sees a listing for local businesses which are usually accompanied by a map which allows the viewer to determine which are the most accessible and convenient for them. When the viewer clicks on your site, they will find more information about your business, reviews from your previous clients, ratings and also how they can contact you.

Your goal is to place your business on the top of the listing. This obviously means more exposure and more customers to your business. Many Business directories will allow for various upgrade features which can help get your business listed higher.

Professional online Directories are a great place to get your business listed because the industry specific areas and the searchable databases provided by these large directories make it even easier for the right customer to find your business. And with the ability for your potential customers to find, search and compare professional services all in one place, it means that if you are genuinely providing a valuable service then being listed here can potentially bring you a lot more business, both new and referred.

Out with the old, in with the new.

Customers are not looking in the local paper for services anymore and the yellow pages is a thing of the past. Now when your potential customer wants to find you they go online. Having a listing therefore is obviously crucial to your business. Having your business listed on local business listing will allow possible customers to see your address and telephone number which give them an access to reach you and inquire about your business and the products or services that you are offering.

To sum it up, having your business listed on the local business listing whether it’s an offline or online business, with or without a website will bring you a great positive result and will help your business to get more popular and get more potential customers. So what are you waiting for, get your business listed now!

  3. Tony Tate says:

I in fact just signed up in a directory listing and I have seen some traffic already, so I completely agree with everything you said in your post. A lot of people overlook the need and importance. I am teaching my entire team to do the same thing as I just did. Thanks for getting this out there!

  4. @Susan: I think people more and more are looking online. Phone books are almost becoming obsolete and they take up so much room don’t they? Besides the print is way too small to read :)

@Keyuri: What does that strange word “time” mean? I know it sounds familiar :)

@Trudy: I think our linking will look natural if it “is” natural right?

@Sean: The “good old days” – you mean before the whole world went crazy on the Internet and going mobile? I “hear” you and agree.

  5. Sean says:

Directories listing have been abused by many marketers all these years. I still remember it was easy to rank in seo engines for certain products or services after having them placed right categories. But that were the good old days.

When i first read the title, i thought you’re talking about list building. For directories, i haven’t used them a lot and i forgot about them completely. I’m going to try some of them and see. Thanks for sharing

  7. Directories plays a big part of the SEO industry even before they knew they are lol! There are directories which are free and there are also paid ones depending on the quality of links it can provide. In my opinion, having a links page to cater reciprocals can help a lot to optimize the use of directories.

    • Hi Paul,
Yes, directories do play a huge role in SEO. The quality of the directory is important though – we need to make sure we are not getting listed in ones that the search engines regard as link farms.

  8. Trudy says:

Directories have always been a pro, but only when used in moderation. It is a part of the larger picture to make your linking structure look more natural, and give your site more credibility. Thanks for the reminder.

  9. Keyuri Joshi says:

Great advice! I have signed up at several directories but have not taken the time to cultivate the listing. Your post is a good reminder. Thanks!

  10. Susan Oakes says:

Good reminders Julie, especial the local listings. Although some people will use offline it doesn’t make sense for a small business not to make sure they are listed in the relevant places where customers search.

  11. Hi George, I think people might overlook this important aspect of getting exposure for their business especially in light of the fact that there are so many directories online. That is one of reasons the industry-specific ones have more power. I always tell my clients – find out where your competitors are online and make sure you are there too!

  12. Hi,

I must admit it, that’s right. A business listed in industry specific online directories is always going to have the upper hand over any business that isn’t listed. That’s right, a lot of webmasters, SEO and marketers pros forget about this essential detail and loose the fight against competitors.
