Linking the Online World with the Offline World

Just think about it. You are in an industry comprised of many different professionals. Take the Real Estate Industry as an example. Home Improvement Contractors, Property Managers, Real Estate Agents, Mortgage Lenders, Appraisers, Painters, Electricians, 203K Consultants, Plumbers, and even more are all in the same industry. Now think about this. A Real Estate Agent shares the location of an open house…

The Social Networking Domino Effect of Facebook Check-in

There is another side to all this transparency on the social web and that is one of security and privacy, especially for our children. I wrote about this concern in Are Smart Phones Becoming Too Smart?

BUT, for business, Facebook Check-in is a great way to market on the social web. Do you use Facebook Check-in? Has it helped spread the word about your business? Have you seen a direct increase in conversions as a result? Please share, inquiring minds want to know!

Happy New Year!

I searched through Youtube to find just the “right” video to share with my family, friends, and followers but couldn’t find something that hit the “spot”. Then I came up with the brilliant LOL idea of creating my own. DUH – I do love to “say it with video” :)

Happy New Year 2012

As you know, I love that four letter word “F-R-E-E” and like to share the wealth. So without further ado, here are some of the valuable FREE tools I have recently found.

This is probably very elementary for many, but if you are like me, and not very comfortable with BASIC HTML – this is a great tool :) . “We created this simple link generator to help generate HTML links in a simple way using text or images. Wonder no more – here is another FREE tool: Now you can make your own banner ads with AdDesigner.

Have You Heard About Prezi?

I have only created one Prezi and the jury is still out as to whether or not I will do more. Not because of the platform but because I am not quite sure I got the “hang” of using it to its fullest potential. Of course my 19 year old daughter said, “Mom, this is so easy” LOL. “Prezi is a cloud-based presentation software that opens up a new world between whiteboards and slides. The zoomable canvas makes it fun to explore ideas and the connections between them. The result: visually captivating presentations that lead your audience down a path of discovery.”You can see my “attempt” here: A Modern Day Samson and Delilah. I ended up modifying it somewhat and incorporating it into another video about the MyVideoTalk tools for small business owners. I will be writing a post about that next but in the meantime, feel free to watch it here: Video Marketing For Small Business. You can try your hand at your own Prezi HERE!

Photoscape

Photoscape is a fun and easy photo editing software that enables you to fix and enhance photos. Access it HERE!

“Scoop is a powerful, intuitive news information aggregator that helps you conquer information overload and increase your efficiency. In a few minutes a day, you are briefed via the Internet on the highest priority issues on your personal – and changing – information agenda and can share key info with your superiors, colleagues and customers.” I have been using Scoop for a little while and am really liking it. If You Can’t Beat Them… Join Them!

Join themSo the WHOLE world is on Facebook right? I heard on the news a few weeks ago that in the US, 6 million people deleted their Facebook profiles. According to Facebook’s statistics, there are over 500 million active Facebook users and 30% of them are in the United States. Although 6 million sounds like a really HUGE number, in perspective of total users, it is a drop in the bucket. Take a quick look at a few more statistics:

  • There are over 900 million objects that people interact with (pages, groups, events and community pages)
  • More than 30 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo albums, etc.) shared each month.
  • Entrepreneurs and developers from more than 190 countries build with Facebook Platform
  • Every month, more than 250 million people engage with Facebook on external websites
  • There are more than 250 million active users currently accessing Facebook through their mobile devices.

What Does This Mean?

There is a heck of a lot of activity going on in the Facebook World – period!

A Picture Speaks a Thousand Words

smart phoneFor small business owners, this statement is true and lends support to the power of video in promoting their brand. However, when it comes to those with less stellar intentions, it can be quite dangerous.

Fox News reports in Digital Photos Hide Data — and Cyberstalkers Can Find It, Expert Warns: "… few people realize they may be giving away more than they plan to when they post even the most innocuous photos from their Blackberry phones or Apple iPhones." Through the use of geotags (a GPS stamp), criminals and stalkers are able to track the exact location a person is in when they take and post a photo.

Luckily, there is a way to protect yourself from this tracking as long as you are aware of it. This geotagging functionality is easily disabled and in my opinion, is something everyone needs to know, especially the young people today who post many photos on Facebook directly. How scary is it that our children can inadvertently disclose not only where they hang out but also where they live?

The ICanStalkU.com website has details on how to disable geotagging. PLEASE share this information with everyone you know who uses their smart phones to upload pictures – especially the young people – our children! My daughter posted the Fox article on her FB page – thank you Alexandra. Let's help keep others safe by sharing…

TMIWe live in a world of total transparency thanks to the Internet and social media networking sites. As small business owners, if we are disingenuous and don't follow-through on our brand promises, we will eventually be found out.

Let's look at this transparency concept from a different perspective. It is one thing to be honest and another to enter the zone of "over-share" or "TMI". On many social networking sites, especially Facebook, we are all privy to information about our "friends" that we might not really want to know. Some business people are holding back getting heavily involved with Facebook not because they are concerned about others seeing what they are doing, but because they don't want their FB “friends” to see what their children are doing!

How about those people who when asked "How are you?" – really tell you? We have all worked in an office where there are those certain people that we try to avoid because if they get us alone, we will never get away. They go on and on and on about everything under the sun and much of it is really personal information that we would rather not know. Isn't the phrase "How are you?" oftentimes really a rhetorical question?

Here's something to try when you are fed up with pushy sales calls. When the sales person asks "How are you"? Tell them the truth – especially if you are having a bad day – the look on their face that you can almost see through the phone will make your day a brighter one.

The point here is that transparent doesn't mean get too personal or share too much. It means be obvious, frank and/or candid. Timing also plays a role here. I try to ingratiate myself to those I need assistance from. The most recent example I can give is from today. My dad has been having health issues and we have been back and forth to doctors, hospitals, ER's etc. Today was a bad day. I needed to take my dad to the ER to get IV fluids because he was seriously dehydrated. His gastroenterologist's secretary likes to complain about how overworked she is and normally I listen, commiserate, understand, etc. However, today when I called her to tell her I was bringing my dad to the ER and she started complaining about how busy she was – THAT was the wrong timing on her part. I really don't care how busy she is normally but today? I REALLY didn't care and there was no sympathy on my part for her being overworked.

Another example of what some consider over-share is commenting on Facebook pictures, however those "some" are usually the young and those young are usually our children. We ‘ole folk like to have conversations that are relevant to a particular photo and sometimes those conversations veer off the original topic. That is ok – it doesn't bother us. However, many of our children don't like this especially if they are in the photo or somehow included in the trail of messages. Apparently photos are "not the place to have conversations". I didn't read those rules anywhere – maybe I missed them?  Apparently the email notices that flood these young folk/our children's inboxes are annoying. My suggestion is to either turn off the email notifications or better still, I – G – N – O – R – E them.

Disclaimer: Blogs are written in one’s own voice and are therefore, exempt from the Over-share/TMI category. JMO :)

LinkedinLinkedin is a very powerful professional ONLY networking site. Unlike Facebook which is HUGE having a Google page rank of 10/10 and an Alexa rating of 2, Linkedin doesn't share photos of our children, latest vacations and what we had for breakfast with our professional connections. To me, this is a good thing :)

How can we make sure we are utilizing our Linkedin profile to its fullest potential? Shari Weiss in her blog post How to Improve Your Linked ROI By Tweaking Your Profile offers some extremely valuable tips such as giving special attention to your profile headline and status updates.

internetToday I dared to open one of the archived newsletters from Entrepreneur. Since I am a web designer I don’t like reading titles such as this: Does Your Business Still Need a Website?

The article discusses the idea of establishing accounts on social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn instead of a website. They evaluated an individual for whom this business strategy worked out. You can read the whole article here. Before giving out my space to social networks, I would like to look into this discussion further and let you know my opinion.

Rudy Mendoza totally abandoned his corporate website saying “We spent tens of thousands of dollars on our website and got almost nothing out of it” I’m really sorry for the designer team who created the website for Rudy Mendoza. They didn’t do a great job. A good website can be profitable.

3 Main Reasons Why Businesses Shouldn’t Ditch Websites for Social Networks:

1. Social networks serve a different purpose than a website. They serve as a tool to communicate directly with customers and achieve real time feedback. The functions of third party applications are complementary to a website but should not replace them.

2. Most social networks are found to be useful when companies and individuals link to additional information about them. Social networks are just a platform to jump from, not to jump into.

3. A website can drive as much sales as, and often times more than these social media networks. Although I have achieved leads and sales from social networking sites, the majority of my business has come from my website.

A brand cannot live without a good website that provides their customers additional information or the ability to purchase the product/service they are interested in. If the company tries to remove this component they risk damaging their branding. Who said you can’t have your cake and eat it too?

Companies should use websites and social media networks to market their products or services. Why should you have to choose when you can use both?

Note: I use social media networks and find that they have been useful in increasing brand awareness for Furlong Design but I would never forgo my corporate website for those sites. Let me know what you think by leaving comments below. Original source: http://furlongdesign.com/2010/04/14/does-your-business-still-need-a-website/
