How to Run a Contest the “Right” Way!

contestWe have all heard that running a contest is a great way to increase brand awareness. I have never run a contest before so when I was presented with the opportunity to get in on the Beta version of FB Contest Burner, I jumped on it and implemented it for a client of mine. The contest is not taking off as I had hoped (apparently the Premium WP version has significantly more functionality – perhaps this is a situation of “you get what you pay for”?) but I am hoping that it will shortly. The rules of the contest are pretty straightforward and the prizes are CASH! Who couldn’t use an extra $100, right? So, if you are on Facebook, please stop by the CONTEST , let me know your thoughts, and of course, feel free to enter. You earn points by sharing and there is another contest within this one – I won’t tell you what it is though, you will have to go find out for yourself :) NOTE: Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom and click the  “Enter Contest” button!

Contests ala Marc Gordon

I was speaking to Marc the other day about this very topic. For those of you who don’t know Marc, he is a Marketing Professional and Public Speaker who can hold the attention of any audience. He uses humor and wit to convey his message and I always look forward to his videos. Marc points out that as valuable as contests CAN be, if done incorrectly – they can have a really negative impact on one’s reputation.  Now besides his suggestions on what to do and what NOT to do when running a contest, Marc is having one of his own. The only problem for me is that I don’t qualify because I don’t have an iPad2 (or an iPad1 for that matter). So Marc, if you are reading this, I am protesting your contest on the grounds that it is discriminatory to those of us who do not own Ipads!

Now what about you? Have you run contests? If so, please share what/how you ran them and what your results were. Inquiring minds really want to know. And now, without further ado, I present MarcTV! Enjoy!

  1. Hi Barry. Did you try a second contest? :)

  2. It’s something that I wish I had known last year when I tried my first contest. LOL! It would have been so much simpler. I tried to follow what I thought was the right way … but I see now I was so wrong.

  3. Lenny says:

    I haven’t tried having a contest but I soon i will…thanks for the idea…

Hi , I think that imposing all kinds of restrictions for participation is one of the things that can prevent the right benefits of being taken from a contest. I mean imposing limits like you should be a blogger is fine but like you mentioned about the Ipad1 , come on that’s a bit too restrictive, isn’t it? Sometimes you may end up barring the right people from entering the contest and let others who may not be the genuine target audience from entering.

  5. Janicca says:

Actually, I think that only bloggers in the blogging and internet marketing niche see all the benefits of social media, if they use it right. However, most of them have never done anything else but have a “blogging blog” so they can not see nor understand the other side of it.

Is it OK according to the Facebook policy to give $100? I read somewhere that you cannot give money in Facebook contests.

    Thanks D.

  7. hi, i just entered the contest as well.

  8. Hi Sanjay, I agree and just moved the enter button up – let’s see how that works! The contest burner is a free Beta FB app that you can get here:

Thanks for stopping by my blog :)

Hi Julie, I entered the contest too! If you can re-design the contest gate feature you can get a lot of people joining them. You can move the button above the fold or insert it in the image. My 2 cents.
Another thing, is Contest Burner is an app that you made or is it ready made?

  10. Hi Catherine – thanks for entering :) I agree with you about moving the contest button up but I didn’t see that as an option – hence my writing in red to “enter contest below”. LOL Yes Marc did take it easy on the health club and that is actually NOT what I would have expected of him.

  11. Hi Julie,
I entered your client’s contest and I like way it works. If you move the “enter the contest” button up, it may be easier for people to enter. I appreciate Marc’s tips about contest purpose, reach, work, and prize. I think he took it easy on the health club who didn’t make good on their contest promises. That business was obviously out of touch with technology and the public.
